Naturally Deaf?

Recently a phrase "naturally deaf" was brought up where it raised all kinds of questions concerning the expression behind it for deaf people who may use it as sign for "Deaf pride." I get it so don't get me wrong. It's about "acceptance" of oneself, acknowledgement of their deafness, yada yada yada.

  1. Kokonut Pundit is taking a jab at the new online discussion forum for HOH/Deaf people - it's called naturallydeaf.com.

It's interesting he jumped to conclusions about this phrase naturally deaf without bothering to investigate why this name was chosen for the new forum. The name was chosen because it's about changing world perspectives on deafness from "disability", "impairment", "hearing test failures" to simply accepting that having a hearing loss is not the end of the world, that with or without auditive technology, we CAN live good lives and don't need to be burdened with the sense that if we don't fix ourselves, we are less than whole, that we are defective. You CAN'T cure hearing loss. But you CAN change your own attitude towards hearing loss for the better.

Essentially, the new forum is about focusing on positivity with a strong bent on community not just for the Deaf but for anyone with a hearing loss. We welcome new members!

  2. Unfortunately, this blogger has chosen to take a phrase out of context and distort it to fulfill his own personal agenda. He is likewise refusing to publish the numerous comments left on his blog that would clarify the meaning and intent of the phrase. It is truly a shame that he feels it so necessary to work out his personal issues in public.

  3. That's just silly. It refers to the new deaf forum, Naturallydeaf.com , and the blogger took it out of context without understanding the reference.

  7. Least I could do something productive with my iPad while I waited for the workshop to open at the CSUN conference. The feller can make odd hoots over things like this.
