Cochlear implants are becoming the standard of care for children born profoundly deaf, according to medical experts. About 40% of these children now receive an implant, a 25% increase from five years ago. Medicaid and most private insurers pay for at least one implant, which can allow children to develop spoken language without extensive occupational therapy.
