What happens before sentencing?

It depends, but if it involves a defendant with a guilty plea, there is a special step in the legal process that happens days before sentencing.

The prosecution gets together with the defendant and his/her lawyer to review a special document the prosecutors prepared, called a sentencing memorandum. This is a private meeting, not in a courtroom with a judge.
