The Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center Newsletter - July 1, 2010

THE TOP STORIES OF THE WEEK

The California Assembly Bill 2072 passed the California State Senate muster and
will be voted on.

The bill does simply adds three more communication options to whats already
being offered to parents of deaf newborns once they failed the hearing
screening. This idea was adopted in 3 states without any of the embarrassing
noise that came out a small group of California sign language enthusiasts.

Our Modern Deaf Communication facet played a vital role in getting the Senate
Health Committee to approve and support AB 2072 and we did it through multiphase
education. We taught them what the future deaf society is about, what the
future of deaf society can do, and how the California State Senate can help the
future of deaf society. We shared with them a lot of pertinent facts and helped
dispel the onslaught of the mythmongering that has come out of the opponent's
camp.

After 2 weeks of saddling on almost entirely on insanity, we succeeded!

Did you know that some in Washington are considering unfairly targeting Social
Security benefits for cuts? For 75 years, Social Security has provided a strong
foundation of income older Americans can count on. But right now members of
Congress and President Obama's Fiscal Commission are considering cuts to address
the federal budget deficit, including cuts to Social Security. Social security
didn't cause the budget deficit, so our retirement shouldn't be put at risk to
fix it!

We will need your help to fight this and it begins with sparing some of your
resources with us.

Keep an eye on http://www.deafadvocacy.org for ways how you can help preserve
social security.

safety, health, and productive living.

The Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center provides services for disabled
individuals and their families in our community who need help in navigating the
social services maze. Every day people go without proper food, shelter, and
essential medical care every day due to a variety of factors including low
wages, job loss, injuries, illness, age, domestic violence, or divorce. While
all of us are susceptible to hard times, disabled individuals are at the most
risk. With the generous support of people like you, we are able to help many of
these families and individuals not only to meet essential daily needs, but to
work toward a brighter future with programs in job training, education,
counselling, elderly assistance, and temporary housing.
