Jefferson County's school board unanimously approved a high school charter application for the Rocky Mountain Deaf School, which has operated a preschool through eighth-grade program in Golden.
Currently, the only options for deaf high school students in the Denver area were to be mainstreamed into regular high school programs or to attend out-of-area programs.
The school will offer a complete high school program, including extracurricular activities and competitive sports.
The program will be bilingual, teaching American Sign Language and spoken English. The high school is expected to open next fall.
