Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center Newsletter - June 3, 2011

Greetings everyone,

With summer vacationing period rapidly approaching, its imperative that hotels
and motels make themselves accessible to travelers with hearing and speech
disabilities. Failure to do so could result in over $7,000 in settlement costs.
We have put together a $600 kit that would go a long way to helping these hotels
become accessible to travelers with hearing and speech impairments. You can
access this kit at http://ocdac.eCa.sh/adakit and this is the real "ounce of
prevention". Please share this with people you know work or operate hotels and
motels. We only have 8 kits left until the next summer.

We have started a social enterprise experiment
http://www.empireavenue.com/ocdeaf to see how people would respond to a
for-profit version of Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center. Using a social media
website Empire Avenue we are seeing how the public responds to our presence, our
biography, our resources, and external communications. After 4 days the
response is very positive and that Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center is worth
investing in.

This coming sunday we have a foodstand fundraiser at the worlds largest chili
cookoff; http://www.tustinchilicookoff.com/ and we are all ready and excited for
this.

And finally, we are almost done putting together a very resourceful booth to be
at the Orange County Fair this summer and I will need your help in keeping our
ebay store up and running while the fair is on and the best way you can help me
out is a small $700 donation to hire someone to man the ebay store while we're
all at the fairgrounds.

Matt Hamill providing inspiration for deaf community

Matt Hamill can't hear his corner during a fight. Although he can read lips from

The downside of concentration: It can make you deaf

Believe it or not, it can. The term has recently been coined "inattentional
deafness" by a group of British researchers from University College London. They
have discovered that people can become deaf to perfectly audible sounds when
focusing heavily on a task.

Armless Man Jumps on hotel desk in protest

He is in a fit because he cannot open his hotel room door. The receptionist
refuses to help him, so he jumps up on the counter and rips through like a
tornado in a trailer park. The hotels refusal to poen his room door is a clear
violation of the ADA.

Paypal is one super online payment system we all come to know for now. However a
new company called VirtaPay is rising up using the same babysteps as paypal.
They need at least 3 million members before they can open up to the public and
your help is needed. We get $10.00 for each new VirtaPay signup. New signups
will be given $25.00 in startup funds. Now isn't that a win win situation for
you and our organization?

Recently they have developed a merchant system that enables members to buy and
sell digital products. Tis is one big step toward making this a viable payment
system.
