Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center Newsletter - April 24, 2011

Greetings everyone,

Our education booth at the Pet Expo last weekend was a complete success. We
shared valuable information to people with disabilities. We raised a record
breaking about of money through donations. We received a lot of food and items
donations to people and their service animals in our residency program.

I had to go through a painful dental procedure this week and I'm glad that I'm
done with this and the nagging toothache is gone forever. I looked like crap.
I'm doing well now.

What is next for us is the local community fairs and we will maintain our brand
and presence at these events.

We are selling shopping passes for the Macy's Community Shopping Day. You can
find more information about this event at

Our monthly meetups are coming up very soon. Look down further into this
newsletter for more information.

And finally, we are putting together a very resourceful booth to be at the
Orange County Fair this summer and I will need your help in keeping our ebay
store up and running while the fair is on and the best way you can help me out
is through the http://wishes.causes.com/wishes/267070 link.

I just want to sign off on this newsletter with a short tribute to Phillip Doyle
who was a friend to many people. Phil as we know him passed away yesterday. He
was one of the liberal giants whom I worked with in my mid 20's. I learned
plenty from him.

A New Reason for Why the Deaf May Have Trouble Reading

Deaf people may have no trouble communicating any idea in American Sign
Language, or ASL, that can be expressed in English. But studies of ASL signers
show that, on average, deaf high school seniors are likely to read at the level

Deaf culture as point of pride? It's more a curse

As an 85-year-old World War II veteran with a clinical diagnosis of severe to
profound hearing loss — caused, I suspect, by dozens of hours of machine gun
fire and hundreds of hours in noisy airplanes — I read professor Harlan Lane's
remarks with increasing amazement and annoyance.
